Outlier

How to play

One prompt, one answer. The rarer your answer, the more it scores. Here are the rules, scoring and a few strategies.

The rules

  1. You get a prompt like “Name a dog breed” or “Name a country whose name ends in E”.
  2. Type one answer that fits. If it isn’t on our list, you can try again until time runs out.
  3. When your answer is accepted, you see where it ranks among all accepted answers, from the crowd pick to the rarest.
  4. Seven prompts make a round. Every grade flies your tuxedo-cat UFO a fixed distance: S 100 km, A 60 km, B 30 km. Best possible flight: 700 km.

Scoring tiers

A · Rare40–75% of the way from the most common answer to the rarest60 km
B · Common0–40% of the way from the most common answer to the rarest30 km

Each prompt also has one hand-picked 🌟 gem answer: obscure, but something a few people will actually think of. It always scores an S.

Typos, aliases and plurals

Capitalisation, accents and “the” at the start don’t matter. Common alternate names work (“Holland”, “Burma”, “Baby Yoda”), plurals are matched, and a small typo is forgiven on longer words. The reveal tells you if we read your answer as something else.

Generated letter prompts

Alongside hand-ranked categories, Outlier builds letter puzzles from master lists: starts with, ends with, contains the letter and exactly N letters long. That’s what keeps Unlimited fresh, round after round.

FAQ

Why wasn’t my answer accepted?

Either it doesn’t fit the prompt or our list is missing it. Lists are curated by hand, so some valid answers aren’t in there yet.

How is rarity decided?

Each list is ranked by hand by familiarity: how likely an average English-speaking player is to think of it. Generated letter prompts inherit the ranking from their master list.

What is the gem answer?

One hand-picked answer per prompt, chosen to be obscure but satisfying: something a few people will actually get. It always scores an S.
